Our Process

The Origin – Agave Artistry

Contraluz 11:11 begins with 100% Maguey Espadín agave, cultivated and harvested by hand by reputable local producers in Oaxaca, México. Cooked underground in traditional stone ovens, the agave hearts (piñas) develop that signature smoky mezcal base. But from the start, Contraluz 11:11 was destined to be different — an experiment in pushing the limits of craft and luxury, while honoring mezcal’s artisanal core.

The Process – Aging With Intention

Once distilled, the mezcal enters a dual-maturation journey that lasts 11 months and 11 days: first in American oak bourbon barrels and then in new Japanese Sakura (cherry wood) casks. The number 11:11 is no coincidence — it's a symbolic timestamp representing celebrating and raising a glass to the present moment, inspired by partner and creative force Maluma. The result? A delicate balance of mezcal’s signature light smoke with the inviting decadence of floral cherry blossoms.

The Craft – Casks With a Story

The Sakura casks, rarely used outside Japanese whisky, are treated and hydrated to unlock rich floral notes. Paired with the depth of ex-bourbon barrels, this blend introduces a bold, new flavor language to mezcal — elegant, indulgent, yet unmistakably true to its roots. Every barrel is carefully curated to ensure complexity, clarity, and balance in every bottle.

The Expression – Bottled at 11:11

From its name to its flavor, Contraluz 11:11 is a toast to being fully present. Bottled in a striking black crystal bottle with gold accents and subtle Japanese calligraphy, it’s not just mezcal — it’s a moment. With only 3,000 bottles released in 2024, this limited-edition is as rare as the milestones it celebrates.
